About 70 minstrel troupes celebrated new year on the 2nd of January during the Cape Minstrel Carnival in Cape Town, with scores coming to watch the parade.

The Cape Minstrel Carnival is Cape Town's longest-running street party and parade and is led by the klopse (Cape minstrels / Kaapse Klopse) every year on January 2.

Historically January 2 was the one day Cape slaves were given off each year. Called Tweede Nuwe Jaar (“second new year”), it is a colourful celebration of our history and sees minstrels, dancers, performers and marching bands performing on the streets of Cape Town.

The nagtroepe (Malay choirs) march on 31 December every year, while the minstrels' roads march takes place on 2 January in a quest to earn highly contested awards such as most flamboyant performance, best dressed troupe and best band.
